New York Times closing its sports department, will rely on The Athletic for coverage

One of the United States’ largest newspapers is disbanding its sports department. The New York Times made the announcement on Monday, noting that it will rely on The Athletic to cover sports online and in print. The Times bought The Athletic for $550 million in January 2022. The NYT is the third largest newspaper in the U.S., based on circulation, trailing only USA Today and the Wall Street Journal.
