The Tidewater EMS Council implemented three treatments last year to increase survival rates across its region of South Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore and Southampton County. Since October 2022, emergency medical services vehicles have carried whole blood to treat trauma patients, said David Long, executive director of the Tidewater EMS Council. Research shows the most likely cause of death for people under age 46 is trauma, with 25% of those injuries being survivable. Trauma patients, who’ve suffered major blood loss, benefit from receiving whole blood prior to reaching the hospital....
