Class-Action Suit Filed by Migrants Flown to Martha's Vineyard
Summary from the AllSides News Team
On Tuesday, a group of migrants flown to Martha's Vineyard by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis filed a class-action lawsuit against he and Florida's Transportation Secretary.
Alianza Americas, a network of migrant-led organizations based in Chicago, and three migrants who landed on the Massachusetts island last week on flights chartered by DeSantis are accusing him of a "premeditated, fraudulent, and illegal scheme" to advance political, financial and personal interests. The suit, filed in Massachusetts federal court, is asking a judge to declare the relocations illegal under the Constitution as well as state and federal laws. Earlier this week, Lawyers for Civil Rights had asked state and federal authorities to investigate the flights, and a Texas sheriff has also opened an investigation.
DeSantis's administration responded by saying that the migrants made the journey voluntarily after signing consent forms, and that they were well cared for. Meanwhile, immigrant attorneys are saying that DeSantis "kidnapped" the migrants by sending them to Martha's Vineyard. DeSantis has become the latest GOP governor to relocate migrants to so-called "sanctuary cities" in protest of President Biden's immigration policies. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has sent individuals to D.C., Chicago and New York City, and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R) has bused migrants to D.C.
The issues surrounding the arrival of migrants in Martha's Vineyard continues to be covered prominently by sources across the political spectrum.
