Toni Morrison, Nobel laureate and Medal of Freedom recipient, died Monday night at the age of 88. Morrison was best remembered as an author who wrote about the African American experience, particularly the experience of African American women. In 1993, Morrison became the first black woman to win the Nobel prize for literature. In 2012, President Barack Obama awarded Morrison the highest civil honor, the Medal of Freedom. Morrison wrote plays, essays, children's books, and eleven novels.
