Senate Republican Leadership Urges Support of Election Results for Good of the Republic

Summary from the AllSides News Team

With emotional tones supporting the democratic process, leading Republican senators urged members not to oppose the certification of the electoral college for Joe Biden. Thursday morning, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell described it as the most important vote of his 36 year career. "The United States Senate will not be intimidated," McConnell said. Senator Mitt Romney, former Republican nominee for President, and Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, whose state's electoral votes were challenged, also spoke against opposing the Electoral College votes as submitted by the states, laying out emotional and rational arguments. Coverage of the speeches themselves were similar across the political spectrum. Some sources included more of the senators' statements about election irregularities that, while not large enough to overturn the 2020 presidential election, must be addressed for future elections.
