Encinitas will treat its iconic heritage palm tree at Moonlight Beach regularly with pesticides to prevent it from being killed by South American palm weevil infestations. But it will be the only palm that Encinitas will try to save from the beetle’s attacks, the City Council decided Wednesday. Council members told city staff that there’s little sense in spending an estimated $250,000 a year to chemically treat all of the other Canary Island palms in city parks and along public road rights-of-way.
