Suffolk said in a statement that the red beam that fell was a climbing rail for the loading system, and that it “dislodged and fell while it was being assembled.” The beam shattered multiple windows on the way down before becoming lodged in the ninth floor, right above the commuter rail platform, said James Greene, deputy chief of the Boston Fire Department.
