Election 2023: State Races to Watch

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Americans in several states are heading to the polls on Tuesday to vote in state and local races that will give some indicators for the 2024 presidential election.

Virginia: Virginia Republicans hope to hold onto the House and flip the Senate. Gov. Glenn Youngkin's (R) legislative record and strong approval rating continue to bolster him for a possible White House run in coming years, and his pledge to sign an abortion limit at 15 weeks of gestation if Republicans take the legislature could be a national bellwether.

Kentucky: There is a close race for governor between Gov. Steve Beshear (D) and Attorney General Daniel Cameron (R) in the state, which leans red. However, only three Republicans have been elected governor since 1947. Both Beshear and Cameron are considered rising stars in their political parties.

Ohio: Voters will decide on Issue 1, which would preserve the right to make reproductive decisions such as fertility treatments, contraception, and abortions. Populist-leaning Republicans were able to defeat an initiative that would have required a 60% vote threshold rather than a simple majority to pass amendments to the state constitution.

Pennsylvania: If Carolyn Carluccio (R) defeats Daniel McCaffery (D) in Pennsylvania's Supreme Court race to replace the late Justice Max Baer (D), Republicans will pick up one more vote in favor of their policies. TV advertising has recently been playing a role in the race after a poll showed that many voters didn't know enough about either Carluccio or McCaffery to form an opinion.
