Absences Could Affect the Outcome of Today’s Speaker Vote

The House officially convened at 12:03 p.m. Lawmakers have begun taking what’s known as a quorum call, which allows the clerk to get an official headcount on House members who are present and voting.
Absences among Democrats or Republicans could change the number of votes that a candidate needs to win the gavel. There are 221 Republicans and 212 Democrats overall, with Republicans only able to lose four votes if all Democrats are opposed.
