Trump's immigration suspension: What's the goal?

What’s happening: President Trump on Monday announced via Twitter that he would be signing an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration to the United States in response to the coronavirus pandemic. He later provided details of the order, which is much more limited than his initial announcement suggested.
Under the order, the U.S. will stop issuing permanent residency visas — commonly known as green cards — for 60 days. It will not affect temporary workers. There are reportedly exceptions for workers in “essential” professions and family members of U.S. citizens....
