National Guard Deployed and Armed to Defend Capitol Building Ahead of Biden Inauguration

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The National Guard was armed with lethal weapons Tuesday night as it fortified the area surrounding the U.S. Capitol building ahead of Congress' debate over impeaching President Donald Trump. Up to 20,000 troops will be deployed in Washington D.C. leading up to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20, up from Monday’s commitment of 15,000. This comes as the FBI warns of “armed protests” against the inauguration being planned in all 50 states and D.C. Despite the warnings, Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris still plan on taking the oath of office outside, as is tradition. Some outlets on all sides published coverage of photographs of National Guard troops sleeping on the floors of the Capitol building. Some right-rated outlets compared the number of National Guard troops to the number of troops currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Coverage in left-rated outlets tended to be more blunt in linking President Trump to past and future armed protests against the election.
