House Republican Sues to Allow Pence to Overturn Election

Summary from the AllSides News Team

A group of Republicans led by Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert sued Vice President Mike Pence on Monday to grant Pence “sole authority” to determine which Electoral College votes are counted. The lawsuit is the latest in a series of attempts by supporters of President Donald Trump to overturn the result of the 2020 presidential election. As part of their lawsuit, the Republican plaintiffs are also seeking to strike down the 1887 Electoral Count Act as unconstitutional. The House of Representatives will meet Jan. 6 to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win. Outlets from across the spectrum said the lawsuit was unlikely to succeed. Some right-rated outlets framed the lawsuit as seeking to give Pence authority to determine the “legitimacy” of electoral votes. Some left-rated outlets mentioned that the judge hearing the case was appointed by Trump.
