A man accused of plowing an SUV into a group of immigrants at a Brownsville bus stop on Sunday, killing eight and injuring 10 others, had several past run-ins with the law and won a $2.3 million in a lawsuit against the city nine years ago.
Brownsville police identified the suspect as George Alvarez, 34, of Brownsville. He was charged Monday with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police Chief Felix Sauceda said Alvarez has a lengthy criminal record.
