2022 Ohio Senate Election

In Ohio, the retirement of two-term senator Rob Portman (R) has opened the door to a tight GOP race. The primary election is on May 3rd, and the general election is on November 8th.

Portman hinted at some of the hurdles a new GOP senator might face when announcing his exit, citing a “partisan gridlock” that made it difficult to “make progress on substantive policy.” Polls suggest that there are five significant Republican contenders to replace him — including venture capitalist and “Hillbilly Elegy” author J.D. Vance, Ohio state senator Matt Dolan, former Ohio state treasurer Josh Mandel, attorney Jane Timken and investment banker Mike Gibbons.

As for the Democratic primary, there are three main candidates in the running — U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, consumer protection attorney Morgan Harper and community activist Traci Johnson. While Ryan is betting on his familiar appeal to blue-collar workers, Harper is looking to bring new jobs to Ohio as part of what she calls a clean energy economy.
