May 1 marks the 84th anniversary of Chicago’s greatest May “snowstorm” and Chicago’s largest snowfall so late in the season. The snow was all the more surprising in that the winter of 1939-40 had below-normal snowfall with the largest snowstorm generating only 3.5-inches in late February.
