Differences Remain After Biden Meets With McCarthy

President Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy met on Monday evening at the White House in an effort to break the partisan stalemate that has prevented action to avert a default on the nation’s debt, after negotiations faltered over the weekend over Republicans’ demands to cut spending in exchange for raising the debt limit.

Mr. McCarthy emerged from the meeting saying it was “productive” and the best meeting the two have had since their discussions began. Yet no agreement was reached.
