Minnesota nuclear plant shuts down because of leak of radioactive material
Xcel Energy said it would temporarily shut down its Monticello nuclear power plant after it detected radioactive tritium being leaked into groundwater nearby for the second time in two years. Xcel said Friday that the leakage began earlier this week and spilled an estimate of “hundreds of gallons” of contaminated water at the Minnesota plant, caused by temporary repairs made to a defective section of the pipe.
