GOP, White House Spar Over Student Loan Forgiveness

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The White House's Twitter account responded to criticism of the new student loan forgiveness plan by framing some critics as hypocrites.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) appeared on a Newsmax (Right bias) broadcast this week and called the loan forgiveness plan "completely unfair." The White House Twitter account then quoted a clip of Greene's comments and said that she "had $183,504 in PPP loans forgiven." Criticisms of the plan from Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA), Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) were met with similar critiques from the White House account. The White House said Buchanan had $2.3 million in PPP loans forgiven, and that Mullin had $1.4 million forgiven. Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans were given out during the COVID-19 pandemic to help businesses maintain their workforces.

Other conservatives are planning campaigns to frame the forgiveness plan as misguided. The conservative American Action Network will air ads nationwide for the next 10 days "featuring actors who portray everyday workers talking about how they have worked extra shifts just to help others get out of debt," according to the Washington Examiner.

Left- and center-rated sources covered the news more prominently. Right-rated sources often described the White House's response as "targeting" or "lashing out" at Republicans. Conversely, NBC News described Republicans as having "bashed" and "blasted" the plan.
