Haley's Civil War Remarks Garner Bipartisan Criticism
Summary from the AllSides News Team
During a town hall event this week, presidential candidate Nikki Haley was asked what caused the Civil War. Haley caught flak across the spectrum for not mentioning slavery in her answer. She later added, “Of course the Civil War was about slavery.” Why did she leave this out of her initial answer, and what does this reveal about her candidacy?
Contempt for Voters? Jeffrey Blehar (Lean Right bias) determined that Haley’s “gaffe” was not a result of racism or a desire to rewrite history but instead her “contempt for the intelligence of her voters.” Blehar argued that Haley opted to dodge the question because she did not think Republican voters could handle an honest answer. Blehar concluded, “we rarely get such accidental insight into how little politicians think of their own voters.”
Wishy-washy? Matt Lewis (Center bias) said Haley’s answer “reinforces some negative perceptions that many of us have long had about Haley’s character.” Lewis argued that Haley is “wishy-washy.” Addressing the possibility that Haley thought mentioning slavery wouldn’t play well with her Republican audience, Lewis determined she “would have been just fine by telling the truth.”
Contested History? A writer in the New York Times Opinion (Left bias) broke down how a decades-long disagreement over the institution of slavery divided the nation and culminated in the Civil War. The writer determined that an understanding of slavery’s role in American history is important because “The facts of our history are currently contested — especially that history.”

What Nikki Haley Didn’t SayNikki Haley drew criticism this week for what she didn’t say. As she campaigned in New Hampshire for the Republican presidential nomination, a person asked her to name the cause of the Civil War.
Ms. Haley, a former South Carolina governor, joked it was not an “easy question.” She then mentioned “how government was going to run,” “freedoms,” the need for “capitalism” and individual liberties. When the questioner observed that she hadn’t mentioned slavery, she asked, “What do you want me to say about slavery?”
She told a radio interviewer...

Nikki Haley’s Slavery Gaffe Shows How Scared She Is of MAGA RepublicansWe’re just over two weeks out from the first votes being cast for the 2024 Iowa Republican primary caucuses. But instead of surging toward the finish line, Nikki Haley is ending 2023 with a horrible choke.
In case you missed it, during a New Hampshire town hall meeting on Wednesday, Haley was tripped up by a question on what caused the Civil War. Rather than simply answering “slavery,” Haley gave a convoluted answer that included saying, “the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run...

Nikki Haley’s Sin Isn’t RacismWhile you and I were enjoying a sleepy, pleasantly aimless post-Christmas decompression period, some people out there apparently couldn’t leave well enough alone, and continue to labor under the delusion that they are running for the Republican nomination for president of the United States. This explains why, instead of enjoying holiday leftovers in the quiet of her own home, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley was out there on the campaign trail yesterday in Berlin, N.H., casually holing her insurgent campaign’s entire raison d’etre below the waterline with the sort...
