Police Shoot 1-Year-Old in Mississippi During Shoplifting Investigation

A police officer in Senatobia, Mississippi, shot and killed a 1-year-old boy in a vehicle while allegedly investigating a shoplifting incident. Outlets on the left emphasized local upset and demands for transparency and better training for local law enforcement, while the right covered it less frequently and focused on the police officer's claims about the situation.

The Details: Police officers were at a Walmart in Senatobia investigating calls about alleged shoplifting when they encountered mother Vellesiya Wiley and toddler Kohen Wiley in a car driven by Kohen's aunt. Police say they saw Wiley and her friend "fleeing" the parking lot, according to New York Post (Lean Right bias), and attempted to stop the vehicle. Police said the aunt drove towards the officers, almost hitting one, leading the officer to fire his gun. The sheriff's department is conducting an investigation to determine if any of the involved officers will be placed on leave.

Wiley's Statements: Wiley said despite officers saying she shoplifted, she was not charged. According to NBC News (Lean Left), Wiley also denied that the woman driving the car tried to hit the officers, saying, "They was all on the right side, and she was driving towards the left."

Public Protest: Both NBC and Mississippi Today (Center bias) highlighted that city residents have expressed concern over the police officers' actions, with some gathering outside the Walmart and the City Hall to protest. A resident told NBC, "We lost a child because of carelessness, recklessness of the police. This was going to eventually end up with them killing someone because they overreact on small things that shouldn't escalate." Mississippi Today reported that police used teargas to disperse the crowds outside the Walmart.
