ICE Detention Center Death May Be Ruled Homicide, Per Report

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The death of an unauthorized Cuban migrant held at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center may be ruled a homicide according to reports.

The Details: According to reporting Thursday from The Washington Post (Lean Left bias), the January 3 death of 55-year-old Cuban national Geraldo Lunas Campos at Camp East Montana ICE detention center in El Paso, Texas may be ruled a homicide. According to an incident report by ICE, Campos died "after experiencing medical distress," explaining that he became disruptive earlier that day and was placed in segregation, which is where staff observed his distress and contacted medical personnel. The Washington Post cited a recording of a conversation between Campos's daughter and El Paso County's Office of the Medical Examiner saying that subject to results of a toxicology report, the office is likely to classify the death as a homicide with the preliminary cause of death being listed as "asphyxia due to neck and chest compression." The Post also cited an email from Assistant Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin, who said "Campos violently resisted the security staff and continued to attempt to take his life" and "After repeated attempts to resuscitate him, EMTs declared him deceased on the scene."

For Context: Thursday President Donald Trump issued a public warning to "corrupt politicians of Minnesota" about the possibility of instituting the Insurrection Act following a second ICE involved shooting in Minneapolis leading to protests, just a week after an ICE agent's fatal shooting of  37-year-old Renee Good.

How The Media Covered It: Some outlets on the left, like the Washington Post, referenced what they called "nationwide upheaval" over the fatal shooting of Good, saying the event has "raised questions about the training and oversight of the ICE officers helping to carry out the Trump administration's crackdown." Both the Washington Post and The Guardian (Left) referenced witnesses reports of the incident in the detention center, with the Guardian article saying the reports conflicted what ICE said happened. Outlets on the left, like the Washington Post highlighted Campos's immigration history and familial relationships, while outlets on the right like Just the News (Lean Right) tended to highlight Campos's criminal history including charges like sexual contact with a child under 11, unlawful possession of a weapon during a robbery, among several other criminal convictions.
