Middle East Eye Rated Left in October 2023 Independent Review

An October 2023 Independent Review of Middle East Eye returned an AllSides Media Bias Rating™ of Left.

At the time of review, most of the website's content focused on the war between Israel and Hamas. An AllSides reviewer reviewed content from both before and after the beginning of the war on October 7, 2023 to reach a conclusion.

At the time of review, most of the content published on Middle East Eye's website were stories of interest to the Middle Eastern and Muslim worlds. The subject matter of articles reviewed by AllSides included the Israel-Hamas conflict, Israeli politics, Palestine, legal cases involving Muslims in the United States, U.S. immigration, Joe Biden's administration, and conservative politicians across the European Union.

Middle East Eye's story choice was biased, heavily in favor of the left, and it often elevated perspectives from progressive media and activists, while criticizing conservative politicians, Netanyahu's Israeli government, and the Biden administration. For example, in an article titled "EU-Tunisia migrant deal 'terrible for human rights', says HRW," the writer described Italy's conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as "right-wing," but included no descriptors for European Union President Ursula von der Leyen.

The outlet also expressed bias heavily in favor of Palestine. A prominently feature opinion essay, titled "Israel-Palestine war: Has Biden lost control of Netanyahu?" labeled Hamas' October 7, 2023 acts of terror against Israeli civilians a "Palestinian fighters' attack." At the time of review, AllSides did not encounter any opinions on the site from a pro-Israel perspective.
