Second ICE-Involved Shooting in Minneapolis Leads to Protests

A traffic stop on Wednesday initiated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis led to a man being shot in the leg and three individuals being arrested.

The Details: According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), agents were attempting to arrest an unauthorized migrant from Venezuela. The man fled from agents in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car, and while agents attempted to apprehend the subject, two others from a nearby apartment reportedly came out and started attacking the officer. DHS said, "As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broomstick" and the officer proceeded to fire "defensive shots to defend his life." The man shot reportedly suffered a non-fatal wound, and both the officer and the Venezuelan migrant were transported from the scene to the hospital, while the other two subjects involved were arrested.

For Context: Last week during an altercation with ICE agents in Minneapolis, 37-year-old Renee Good was fatally shot, sparking finger pointing from figures on both the left and right and leading some to question, "Where Do We Go From Here?" Wednesday night's altercation brought many protestors to the scene of the incident, with some people shooting fireworks and throwing things at officers, and officers deploying flashbangs and chemical irritants in an effort to disperse the crowds. Democratic Mayor of Minneapolis Jacob Frey blamed ICE for "causing chaos" in the city, while at the same time reprimanding the disorderly protestors saying "For anyone taking the bait tonight, stop. That is not helpful. Go home. We cannot counter Donald Trump's chaos with our own chaos." President Donald Trump also mentioned Thursday the possibility of instituting the Insurrection Act "If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don't obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job."
