Who Is the ICE Officer Who Fatally Shot Renee Good?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis was identified as Jonathan Ross and several outlets from across the political spectrum weighed in on coverage surrounding him.

Never Find A Nicer Person: Some outlets, like the New York Post (Lean Right bias) highlighted Ross's good nature as reported by his family. Ross is married to a Filipino woman, and is "a committed, conservative Christian, a tremendous father, a tremendous husband" according to Ross's father, who also said "I couldn't be more proud of him." He is also a veteran of the Iraq war, and according to the outlet his in-laws are doctors who live in the Philippines. The Post reported that Ross's wife has historically shared photos on social media posing alongside a US Border Patrol helicopter. The Independent (Lean Left) also covered statements made by Ross's father, who defended his son's actions saying, "He will not be charged with anything" and describing his son as a "tremendous" person. The Independent called the incident in Minneapolis a "national flashpoint" and said the Trump administration labeled the act "domestic terrorism" while "state and local authorities condemned the ICE agent's response as reckless." The Post, unlike the Independent, highlighted the anti-ICE protests "erupt[ing]" across the nation, and said "Democratic leaders ramped up their divisive rhetoric in the wake of the shooting."

10-Year Law Enforcement Veteran: Outlets like CNN (Lean Left) focused on Ross's history in law enforcement, opening the article by saying "Last summer, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent found himself in a perilous situation," explaining that Ross was "pinned into the back window of a car as a suspect sped away, dragging him across the pavement for about 100 yards." CNN went on to say he suffered injuries to his arm and hand, also mentioning that he "fired his Taser at the man during the encounter." The coverage then linked the two incidents together in a way, saying "Roughly six months later, the same officer faced another driver who hit the gas as he tried to stop the vehicle," explaining that "this time, he fired with his service weapon — killing 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good." The outlet mentioned that Trump administration officials cited the dragging case as evidence "that ICE agents face deadly threats that compel them to react with deadly force," however, also highlighted local lawmakers and some experts who said the "situation was far from life threatening." Other outlets like The Guardian (Left) also echoed much of the same coverage, highlighting him as a 10-year law enforcement veteran. The Guardian's coverage, however, framed coverage around the "outrage" the incident sparked both in terms of "thousands of people gather[ing] in protest" and "strident rebukes from Minnesota officials and on Capitol Hill." The article mentioned that "some Democrats on Capitol Hill have threatened to withhold funding to the Department of Homeland Security" as a result, and provided a quote from Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, saying "To ICE: get the f*** out of Minneapolis." Neither CNN nor The Guardian mentioned any of the statements from Ross's family.
