Two of former President Donald Trump’s top deputies have come out against his Tuesday declaration of a third consecutive White House bid, calling for “new leadership” and a president who is not constantly “claiming victimhood.”
The statements were made Wednesday by former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after the 76-year-old Trump launched his long-expected 2024 White House run at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
“We need more seriousness, less noise, and leaders who are looking forward, not staring in the rearview mirror claiming victimhood,” the 58-year-old Pompeo, who served as Trump’s chief diplomat from 2018 through 2021, tweeted Wednesday.
”I think we will have better choices in 2024,” Pence, 63, told the Associated Press. “I’m very confident that Republican primary voters will choose wisely.”
