Trump asks Supreme Court to restore states' access to citizenship database before election

Another legal battle over the 2026 midterms reached the Supreme Court on Tuesday as the Trump administration asked the justices to restore broad access for states to a federal database of some, but not all, U.S. citizens.

Solicitor General D. John Sauer asked the high court to lift a lower-court order that blocks states from using Social Security numbers to search a Department of Homeland Security database known as Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE.
