Summary from the AllSides News Team
The families of those killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting agreed on Tuesday to settle liability claims against Remington Arms for $73 million, ending a yearslong legal battle.
Remington, the now-bankrupt manufacturer of the Bushmaster XM15-E2S semi-automatic rifle used in the shooting, previously offered a $33 million settlement in July 2021. Because gun makers are protected from liability for crimes committed with their products, the Sandy Hook families focused their case on the way Remington had allegedly marketed its weapons βto all people for all uses,β including to at-risk men. βThe immunity protecting the gun industry is not bulletproof,β said attorney Joshua Koskoff, adding, βWe hope they realize they have skin in the game, instead of blaming literally everybody else.β
Some outlets like ABC News (Lean Left) and BBC News (Center) said the settlement was the first time a gun maker had been βheld liableβ for a mass shooting in the U.S. However, it was unclear whether Remington admitted responsibility or legal liability in the settlement agreement. Coverage in right-rated outlets tended not to make such statements.

"These nine families have shared a single goal from the very beginning: to do whatever they could to help prevent the next Sandy Hook. It is hard to imagine an outcome that better accomplishes that goal," said Josh Koskoff, an attorney for the victims' families, in a statement on Tuesday.
