Australian Leaders Propose New Gun Laws Following Deadly Shooting

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Australian leaders on Monday said they'll strengthen the country's gun laws following a mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney's Bondi Beach that left at least 15 people dead.

The Details: Federal, state and territory leaders agreed to pursue measures that would limit the number and type of firearms an individual can own. It would also require more frequent reviews and expirations of gun licenses, and expand the use of criminal intelligence in licensing decisions. Additional proposals include restricting gun licenses to Australian citizens, tightening controls on firearm imports and emerging technologies such as 3D-printed weapons, and advancing work on a national firearms register.

The Suspects: On Sunday, two men opened fire at Bondi Beach, killing at least 15 people and injuring 40 others. Australian authorities said the older suspected gunman had legally held a license for about a decade and owned six registered firearms. Police fatally shot him at the scene. His adult son, who is also suspected of aiding in the shooting, was not licensed. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.

For Context: Australia enacted sweeping gun reforms after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which virtually banned rapid-fire rifles and is widely credited with reducing mass shooting deaths. Some of its laws also include mandatory background checks, a 28-day waiting period for gun purchases and requiring citizens to provide a reason for owning a gun, like hunting, sport shooting or historical collections. The Bondi Beach attack was the deadliest shooting in nearly three decades.

How the Media Covered It: Outlets on the Right generally emphasized Australia's existing gun restrictions, the shooters' backgrounds and claims of rising antisemitism. Left-rated outlets focused more on proposed policy changes and the number of guns owned in Australia–four million. Townhall (Right) argued Australia's gun laws failed to prevent the attack, citing alleged police response failures and asserting that strict regulations left civilians unable to defend themselves. Daily Wire (Right) and Fox News (Right) highlighted officials' descriptions of the shooting as extremist-motivated and "target[ing] Jewish Australians." NPR (Lean Left) described post-1996 reforms as "unifying" leaders under gun laws and compared Australia's response to the US's. CNN (Lean Left) wrote that until Sunday, Australia had "decades of proof that tough gun laws can make a country safer" and highlighted increasing gun ownership over the last two decades. The Guardian (Left) led with data on the concentration of gun ownership among a small number of license holders. NewsNation (Center) highlighted Australia's existing gun laws "meant to prevent mass attacks", previous investigations of the suspect before the shooting and criticism of the Australian government's response to rising antisemitism.
