Outlets Across Spectrum Weigh In On America's 250th Birthday

Summary from the AllSides News Team

America's 250th anniversary will be celebrated in towns and cities across the nation this weekend, leading many outlets across the political spectrum to highlight differing perspectives on the occurrence.

The Lottery Of Life: Opinion writer Mike Pompeo said "the United States has been blessed" while at the same time being "a blessing to the world" in an article for the Washington Times (Lean Right bias). Pompeo said, "thanks to the genius of our Founding Fathers, the sacrifice of generations of patriots, and the fortitude of our constitutional order, this upstart nation not only survived for 250 years; it became the freest, wealthiest, and most powerful country in world history," adding that "to be born in America is to win the lottery of life."

Global Citizen Gone Rogue: The Guardian (Left) highlighted correspondents around the world on their perceptions of the anniversary. The article opened by saying "America has long stood for freedom and prosperity, but under Trump insults, threats and unpredictability have become the new norm." China correspondent Amy Hawkins said "the US's wealth and abundance has long attracted even the most ardent Chinese nationalists," but added that "In the past decade, all that has changed." President Donald Trump "has a lot to answer for," according to Hawkins, explaining that "he has weaponized the US economy to impose painful tariffs, punishing Chinese people for what many see as their own virtue: their ability to produce goods that US customers will buy." The article quoted correspondents from several other nations, all giving reasons for their perception in America being a "global citizen gone rogue."

The Perfect President: Matt Kane, writing opinion for American Thinker (Right) said "The most unapologetically pro-America president in American history gets to preside over arguably the most celebratory term in our nation's storied history." President Trump, according to Kane, "has delivered numerous measurable wins: an impenetrable border, record-low murder rates, the ending of multiple foreign conflicts, a surging stock market, and a replenished military." Kane added that "one of his most profound achievements cannot be measured by numbers alone: the resurrection of the American spirit, which has flowed from his deep, unwavering, and evident belief in American exceptionalism." In Kane's eyes, Trump is "the perfect president for America 250."

Hijacking America's 250th Birthday: NPR (Lean Left) highlighted Democratic critics and watchdog groups accusing the group organizing the celebrations, Freedom 250. Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee published a 55-page report saying Trump and Freedom 250 have turned this "milestone into a 'hotbed of corruption and self-enrichment' through tactics that potentially amount to criminal fraud." The report stated that several of the events featured a "sanitized presentation of history and overtly Christian bent" while accusing the group of "soliciting foreign funds, misleading donors and selling access to the president."

"It's Survival": Another article from The Guardian highlighted "new citizens," saying that "amid Trump's immigration crackdown, thousands take the oath of allegiance in a US 'not as welcoming as in the past.'" The article framed the celebration around the feelings of those becoming naturalized citizens, giving for example a "mother of two young children" whose "swell of pride [at her oath of allegiance ceremony] was tempered with sobering memories of federal immigration arrests in her surrounding neighborhood."

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died at the age of 35 — a fact that has prompted many lachrymose musicologists to wonder at what might have been.
