Is Replacing Biden With a New Nominee Undemocratic?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

President Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race over a month after primary elections concluded, prompting media dialogue on whether the democratic process is being subverted.

Undemocratic Democracy: Andrew Prokop of Vox (Left bias) argued that the forcing out of Biden by “Democratic power brokers and donors… may be undemocratic in practice, but in a sense (is) democratic in intention” because the party is aiming to win the election by “picking a nominee who (they hope) can win more people’s votes.” Prokop argued the 2024 Democratic primary was already undemocratic because “Polls showed the voters would in theory have preferred someone else, but they weren’t offered a realistic opposing candidate,” by “party elites.”

Nothing New: Michael Shellenberger (Center bias) and Alex Gutentag of Public (Center bias) argued that 2024 is the third consecutive presidential election where “Democratic Party elites” have subverted the Democratic process. The two cited the Democratic National Committee’s “manipulated money and process to help Hillary Clinton defeat Bernie Sanders” in 2016 and pushing out of then-candidates Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar so Elizabeth Warren could split the progressive vote with Sanders” in 2020 as undemocratic actions.

Democratic Failure: Eric Boehm of Reason (Lean Right bias) wrote that the Democratic Party “failed” by not ensuring “a robust primary campaign that would have put Biden under the microscope.” Boehm added that whatever happens, “the outcome would have been more fair and democratic if it had played out over several months rather than a few weeks.”

Not long after President Joe Biden announced he was stepping aside from the presidential race Sunday, pro-Trump social media influencers had settled on one line of attack: that Democrats had carried out a coup against their own president.

Biden “has now been deposed in a coup,” Trump-backing venture capitalist David Sacks wrote. “Undermining Democracy should never be condoned,” Trump ally Richard Grenell posted. “The coup is complete,” wrote Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ).

“What you just witnessed is proof positive that when the most powerful Democrat institutions and oligarchs unite to topple an American regime, they expect to...

President Joe Biden has just announced he’s not running for re-election and will support Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy instead.

The announcement came as a shock to the people who work at the White House and to campaign aides, one of whom told Politico, "We’re all finding out by tweet. None of us understand what’s happening.” The same was true in Delaware, Biden’s home state. “I don’t think a soul in Delaware knew,” said a Biden campaign official.

As such, this is the third time in three presidential elections that Democratic Party elites have...

When he was campaigning for office four years ago, President Joe Biden promised to be "a bridge" to the next generation of leaders.

That bridge will be four years shorter than Biden may have planned.

Biden, the oldest president in American history at age 81, announced Sunday that he will not seek reelection this year. The announcement ends weeks of speculation about the future of Biden's campaign—and it could kick off a mad scramble to replace Biden on the top of the ticket, with the Democratic National Convention (DNC) approaching quickly and the general election...
