Harris Joins Oprah at Campaign Event in Michigan

Oprah Winfrey hosted the "Unite for America" event in Detroit, Michigan to bolster support for Kamala Harris. 

The Details: The YouTube audience for the event garnered a live audience of around 100,000 viewers. The night had appearances from the family of Amber Thurman, who died after complications from an abortion pill, and the mother of Natalie Griffith, who was wounded during the school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. Meryl Streep, Chris Rock, Julia Roberts, and Ben Stiller also made appearances.  

How the Left and Center Covered It: Reuters (Center bias) and the New York Times (Lean Left) covered Winfrey and Harris favorably, often mentioning Harris' notable endorsements and the teary-eyed room. The Times said, "Harris harnessed the star power of one of her most powerful surrogates." When Harris was asked about the Second Amendment, she said, “If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot...Probably should not have said that," which Reuters described as an "unguarded moment" as opposed to a gaffe. 

How the Right Covered It: The New York Post (Lean Right) highlighted Harris' lack of policy proposals and her response to a question about the border, saying, "Oprah Winfrey [who] was forced to nudge the vice president to get to the point during a rambling response to a policy question."
