Trump wants Mexico-Canada trade deal approved before Democrats, White House turn to infrastructure
Hours before Democratic leaders were expected at the White House, President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to sound off on a familiar refrain: That lawmakers are so focused on investigating him they aren’t getting anything else done.
It wasn’t a new argument, but the timing of the tweets suggested the White House had little incentive to work with Democrats on infrastructure or anything else.
“The Democrats are getting ZERO work done in Congress,” Trump posted in a long series of tweets early Wednesday. “All they are focused on is trying to prove the Mueller Report wrong, the Witch Hunt!”
Trump is scheduled to meet Wednesday morning with Democrats to discuss a plan to deal with the nation’s crumbling infrastructure. The meeting comes just three weeks after Trump and Democrats, in an unusual moment of bipartisanship, agreed to spend $2 trillion on the nation’s crumbling highways, bridges and airports. Still missing, however, was a plan to pay for that investment.
In a letter the White House released late Tuesday, Trump suggested Democrats come to Wednesday’s meeting with a list of infrastructure priorities and specifics about how much funding they would like to dedicate to each.
“Your caucus has expressed a wide-range of priorities, and it is unclear which ones have your support,” he wrote to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
Trump said he had hoped to have those priorities worked out after the last meeting but he claimed Democrats canceled a scheduled meeting, preventing them from advancing the discussions.
“Nevertheless, I remain committed to passing an infrastructure bill,” he said.
