Patriot Front Demonstrators March in DC on July 4

Demonstrators who appeared to belong to the Patriot Front group marched in Washington, DC, on Saturday during America's 250th birthday celebrations.

The Details: Videos that circulated online showed hundreds of protesters uniformed in khaki pants, blue polos, brown hats, and partial face masks marching in DC with American flags, some of which were turned upside down. Videos and photos also showed a few protesters holding Confederate flags. One image highlighted by several mainstream outlets and social media commentators shows a black woman sitting on public transportation, surrounded by demonstrators.

For Context: The Patriot Front was founded after the 2017 Unite the Right Rally in Virginia, where a protester rammed his car into a crowd, killing one and injuring 35. It was founded by Thomas Rousseau, who reportedly led Saturday's march. On its website, the group says, "Our mission is a hard reset on the nation we see today – a return to the traditions and virtues of our forefathers. The same spirit that urged our ancestors onward to create this nation will once again be brought to light, and a new America will be built within its current dilapidated, shameful iteration."

Alternative Narrative: In recent years, several commentators on the right have suggested that the group is compromised by federal agents.

How The Media Covered It: Most outlets across the spectrum described the demonstrators as "white supremacist" or "white nationalist," often in headlines. The Guardian (Left) described them as "neo-fascist" and later in its body as "white supremacist." Politico's (Lean Left) headline described them as "Demonstrators in white supremacist attire." Center-rated Nexstar Media outlets The Hill and NewsNation authored notably split headlines. The Hill wrote, "White supremacist group marches on mall," while NewsNation wrote, "Masked men in Patriot Front garb march in DC." The story was more widely covered by the left and center than the right. From the right, AllSides found coverage from The New York Post (Right), Washington Times (Lean Right), and The National News Desk (Right).
