Issues That Tipped the Scales for Democrats in the Midterms

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Democrats swept midterm elections across the US in what many outlets have called the "blue wave." What issues dominated at the polls and led Democrats to such widespread victories?

AI and Data Centers: Axios (Lean Left) wrote that voters "showed deep distrust of the AI race" in midterms as many Americans voted in favor of data center moratoriums across the country. Axios highlighted Democrat Gina Hinojosa's victory in the Texas gubernatorial race, as she campaigned on keeping a data center moratorium in place in the state, which the outlet said "fundamentally scrambles the math for the AI buildout." Axios noted that Democratic winners in Ohio, Georgia, and Arizona all favor restrictive policies on data centers as well, seemingly proving that "leaning into AI skepticism" was a "winning strategy" for the party.

The Economy: BBC (Center) covered an SSRS "Voter Poll," which found that the economy was ranked as a "top issue" in the election. The poll found that 65% of voters believe President Donald Trump's policies have worsened economic conditions, and 79% of voters said inflation had caused them or their families hardship in the past year.

The Iran War: New York Post (Right bias) said the Republican Party received "generationally bad election results" and focused coverage heavily on Vice President JD Vance's comments about Iran and Israel. Vance wrote on X, "The reason we lost is the war," blaming Republicans' losses at the polls on negative opinions about America's involvement in Iran." The Post noted that Vance is a "top contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination" and wrote that Vance, a "longtime skeptic of foreign intervention," repeatedly made "overtures to Republicans who felt betrayed by Trump's decision to attack Iran." BBC also noted that 63% of those surveyed in the Voter Poll felt that the US made the wrong decision by involving its military in Iran.

Voters showed deep distrust of the AI race Tuesday, approving dozens of data center moratoriums and electing a raft of candidates who favor slowing a $10 trillion buildout, including in Texas — the epicenter of the boom.

Why it matters: In an election that hinged on an affordability crisis for many Americans, voters made it clear they view Silicon Valley's AI ambitions not as a technological miracle, but as a resource-draining threat to their wallets and communities.

JD Vance blames Iran war and Israel for GOP midterm bloodbath
News

Vice President JD Vance blamed the war in Iran for Tuesday's GOP electoral bloodbath, a sharp departure from his own remarks about the conflict and the closest Vance has come to criticizing President Trump as as his second-in-command.

Vance, believed to be the top contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, decried the GOP "establishment" and nudged Republicans to reconsider their support of Israel in his first public midterm post-mortem.
