Summary from the AllSides News Team
The House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is debating whether to seek testimony from former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence, according to Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL).
Kinzinger, one of the two Republicans serving on the panel, told The Wall Street Journal (Center bias) on Thursday that the committee could decide to issue a subpoena to Pence in order to compel him to testify via a written interview. While some members "indicated" that an interview with Trump is still under consideration, reports pointed to when Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) called the possibility "unlikely" earlier this year. Marc Short, Pence’s former chief of staff, weighed in on the conversation and told CBS News (Lean Left bias) on Friday that asking the former vice president to testify could set a "very risky precedent."
Reports and perspectives across the spectrum focused on the possibility of Pence testifying before the committee. Left-and center-rated outlets suggested that Pence's testimony could shed light on his interactions with the Secret Service on Jan. 6 and clarify whether he believes the "coup attempt was wrong." Some right-rated reports indicated that it's not necessary for Pence to testify given that he believes his story of what he witnessed has already been told and that Americans "understand" he carried out his duty on Jan. 6.
