Trump’s White House Ballroom: Upending Norms, but a Good Addition?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The East Wing of the White House was demolished last week as President Trump prepares to construct a privately funded ballroom in its place, sparking ample media dialogue across the spectrum.

Demolishing ‘Norms’: Linda Feldmann of Christian Science Monitor (Center bias) noted that Trump initially said the ballroom wouldn’t interfere with the White House’s structure and his non-involvement of the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC). She mentioned other projects Trump has planned for Washington, DC, and wrote, “Mr. Trump is demonstrating a signature feature of his second term: Just go for it, and see if anyone tries to stop him.” Feldmann concluded, “Someday… [the ballroom] might feel completely normal. But for now, it’s another defining moment for the Trump era.”

‘Rorschach Test’: The Washington Post’s (Lean Left) Editorial Board described the East Wing’s demolition as a “Rorschach test” where “many see the rubble as a metaphor for President Donald Trump’s reckless disregard of norms and the rule of law” and “others see what they love about Trump: A lifelong builder boldly pursuing a grand vision, a change agent unafraid to decisively take on the status quo.” The Board noted the slow, bureaucratic nature of involving the NCPC and a “not in my backyard” (NIMBY) mentality that can halt progress on key projects. It concluded, “The White House cannot simply be a museum to the past. Like America, it must evolve with the times to maintain its greatness. Strong leaders reject calcification. In that way, Trump’s undertaking is a shot across the bow at NIMBYs everywhere.”

Actually Needed: Jeffrey Blehar (Lean Right) of National Review (Right) said he “Salute[s] those across the ideological spectrum who are using this moment as an educational opportunity to raise awareness about how hateful most ‘Historical Preservation Societies’ across America are.” Blehar added that “the vast majority of these organizations are run by the sorts of useless elderly NIMBY lunatics” and concluded, “the White House actually needs [the ballroom] far more than it needs the nondescript block of administrative office space that was the East Wing.”

Opinion

The teardown of the White House’s East Wing this week is a Rorschach test. Many see the rubble as a metaphor for President Donald Trump’s reckless disregard of norms and the rule of law, a reflection of his willingness to bulldoze history and a temple to a second Gilded Age, paid for by corporate donors. Others see what they love about Trump: A lifelong builder boldly pursuing a grand vision, a change agent unafraid to decisively take on the status quo and a developer slashing through red tape that would...

Analysis

The images are arresting. Where a portion of the stately East Wing of the White House once stood, there’s now a demolition site – complete with construction equipment and debris, the side of the building completely torn off.

In its place, if all goes according to plan, will arise the 90,000-square-foot, $250 million ballroom that President Donald Trump announced in July, a grand event space that will dwarf the existing 55,000-square-foot executive mansion.

Opinion

Since everybody else and his sister has already chimed in about Donald Trump’s sudden demolition of the East Wing of the White House, I thought I might toss my two cents into the bucket as well. And I’ve read a surprising amount of good coverage about it, both here and elsewhere. In general I agree with my National Review colleagues that it’s much ado about nothing, though I suspect more would complain were Trump to take my advice and replace the East Wing with a Bass Pro Shop Pyramid instead...
