Summary from the AllSides News Team
President Trump gave his first State of the Union Address (SOTU) of his second term on Tuesday night. The event was met with Democrat protests and comes as Trump faces criticism over the economy, immigration and foreign policy.
From the Left: NPR (Lean Left bias) framed Trump's SOTU within "negative approval ratings", the Supreme Court delivering "a blow to his tariff policy" and recent killings by ICE in Minnesota. It noted Trump "tout[ing]" his economic policies while simultaneously "attacking Democrats for opposing them." NBC (Lean Left) covered a "clash" between Trump and Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) where Trump said Democrats should be "ashamed" over the Minnesota fraud investigation. It quoted Omar and Tlaib calling Trump a "liar" who "killed Americans" through recent ICE operations.
From the Right: Several outlets on the right highlighted Trump's economic and immigration plans and those who received medals during the SOTU. The National Desk (Right) framed these actions within the upcoming midterms, writing "Trump is hoping to persuade Americans…they should vote for more" in November. Washington Times (Lean Right) covered Trump's "astounding success in controlling the borders" and cited the drop in illegal border crossings. Associated Press (Left) and Fox News (Right) reported on bipartisan applause for Trump's proposal to ban Congress members from insider trading. The Washington Examiner (Lean Right) framed some of its coverage within Trump's low approval ratings.
Outlets across the political spectrum noted public concern over the economy leading up to the speech.
Attendees: Associated Press noted several Democrats invited victims of Jeffrey Epstein to "send a political message." Another Fox News article reported the Department of Homeland Security alleged some of the Democrats' guests were unauthorized immigrants. It quoted the agency saying Democrats are "once again…putting illegal aliens above the safety of American citizens." The New York Post (Lean Right) wrote the mother of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, who was killed by an unauthorized immigrant in 2025, also attended and "broke down in tears" as Trump recounted the attack. It said Democrats "didn't appear to rise" for the standing ovation for Zarutska. Newsweek (Center) reported five Supreme Court justices didn't attend the SOTA, but noted "justices are not required to attend" and "there has not been a consistent standard for judicial attendance" before.
Democrats Protest: Politico (Lean Left) wrote that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffreies "encouraged members to either sit in silent defiance or attend alternative programming" during the SOTU. The Guardian (Left) reported roughly 30 Democrat congressmembers and hundreds of others gathered at the National Mall for a counter-event called the "People's State of the Union." Several outlets reported Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was escorted out after waving a sign that read "Black people aren't apes" in reference to a now-deleted post by Trump. The Hill (Center) also emphasized clashes between Trump and Democrats throughout the SOTU.
