Summary from the AllSides News Team
Donald Rumsfeld, who served as Defense Secretary under Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush, passed Tuesday at the age of 88. Rumsfeld, a Republican, became a controversial figure for leading the offensive on al-Qaida in Afghanistan in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 2003, Rumsfeld targeted Saddam Hussein and invaded Iraq. Bush fired Rumsfeld in 2006 amid divisions between the Defense Department and Colin Powellโs State Department, and controversies regarding U.S. abuse of Iraqi prisoners.
Many political figures from all sides of the political spectrum offered condolences to Rumsfeld's family and honored his years of service, including Bush and Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Some voices from the left heavily criticized Rumsfeld for his role in the Iraq War, calling him a "murderer" and a "war criminal", highlighting the death toll from the war as well as perspectives from those directly affected by the Iraq War. Some voices on the right called Rumsfeld an American hero, and praised his intelligence, patriotism, drive and energy.
