Will Trump Rally Joke Alienate Puerto Rican Voters in Swing States?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage" at Donald Trump's rally in Madison Square Garden. Will it cost Trump the election?

Yes It Will: Politico (Lean Left bias) made the case that "fallout" from the comment could cost Trump the state of Pennsylvania, home to an estimated 472,000 people of Puerto Rican origin, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It interviewed Puerto Ricans in Pennsylvania who described the population as newly energized against Trump. Politico also mentioned Trump's 2017 visit to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, during which he called the island "dirty" and "[tossed] paper towels to survivors," and called Bad Bunny's endorsement of Kamala Harris following the backlash a potential "game changer." BBC (Center) hit many of the same beats as Politico, conducting its own interviews of Puerto Rican Pennsylvanians. It also mentioned a "new policy platform for Puerto Rico" announced by Harris, "promising economic development and improved disaster relief."

No It Won't: The Washington Examiner (Lean Right) argued the "flippant" joke would not make a significant dent in Trump's support among Puerto Ricans. It quoted a pollster who said he had seen "zero change" in polls of Latinos in Pennsylvania since the joke. Washington Examiner said the Harris campaign was "desperate for a vote-moving issue in the final week before Election Day" and listed Trump's gains among Latinos since 2020 as evidence "the Democrats’ traditional hold on Hispanic people" is slipping away.

A flippant “joke” about Puerto Rico told by a crude comedian at former President Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally has not changed any votes in the battleground of Pennsylvania despite hours of anti-Trump media and Harris campaign attacks.

Cygnal pollster Brent Buchanan said that the outfit’s polling of Pennsylvania since the Sunday event showed no change in the Hispanic vote.

In the North Philadelphia neighbourhood of Fairhill, signs of Puerto Rico are never far off.

The US island territory's red, white and blue flag adorns homes and businesses, and the sounds of salsa and reggaetón boom from passing cars and restaurants selling fried plantains and spit-roasted pork.

The area is the beating heart of Philadelphia's more than 90,000-strong Puerto Rican population and forms a key part of Pennsylvania's Latino community, which both the Democrats and Republicans have sought to woo ahead of the 5 November election.

But on Monday morning,...

In response to questions on the comments, and whether Trump was planning to publicly denounce them, Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, “Due to President Trump’s plans to cut taxes, end inflation, and stop the surge of illegal immigrants at the southern border, he has more support from the Hispanic American community than any Republican in recent history.” Local Democrats like Dominguez argue the fallout at the very least reminds Puerto Rican voters of Trump’s previous comments about the island, calling it “dirty” and tossing paper...
