Summary from the AllSides News Team
Both former President Trump and Vice President Harris held campaign events in Pennsylvania over the weekend, as the battle for swing states this fall intensifies.
Trump In NEPA: On Saturday, Trump spoke to thousands in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania at Mohegan Sun Arena where he has held rallies several times before. Many mainstream outlets highlighted insults Trump lobbed at Harris, such as calling her a “radical” and a “lunatic.” Luzerne County, where Wilkes-Barre is located, voted for the Democratic candidate in four consecutive presidential elections until it voted overwhelmingly for Trump in both 2016 and 2020.
Harris Out West: On Sunday, Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, sought to make inroads in some of Western Pennsylvania’s more conservative territory as part of a bus tour in the greater Pittsburgh region. The two stopped in Rochester, Beaver County where they held an event speaking to supporters outside one of their campaign offices. They also reportedly visited a high school, firehouse, and Sheetz convenience store.
For Context: Pennsylvania is a crucial swing state and will carry 19 electoral votes in 2024, down one from 2020. In 2020, Harris and President Biden won the state, while in 2016 it voted for Trump. On Monday, Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, will be back in the state. Trump is scheduled to hold an “Economic and Energy Event” in York, while Vance will speak at a manufacturing company in North Philadelphia.
