Is Kamala Harris's Ideology 'Extreme' or a 'Mystery'?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

After 20 years in public service, Vice President Kamala Harris’s ideology seems extreme to some and a mystery to others. Now that she has become the presumptive Democratic nominee, many are asking what her presidency might look like.

For Context: Unlike candidates Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, who are easily remembered for their Medicare-for-all or wealth-tax proposals, Harris isn't as often associated with a certain issue or policy, though some conservatives especially criticize her record as a prosecutor in California.

What Some Conservatives SaidWashington Examiner's Editorial Board (Lean Right bias) called Harris a "lifelong left-wing ideologue" with "decades of extremist positions on foreign policy, race, abortion, and the environment, among others." They also maintained that Harris should be allowed to explain her extreme views over the years, and journalists should ask her. The Wall Street Journal's Editorial Board (Lean Right) said Harris is "talking as if she’s running in the Democratic primaries and trying to beat California Gov. Gavin Newsom for her party’s presidential nod."

What Some Progressives Said: Two writers for Vox (Left) said "Despite a two-decade career in politics, Harris’s ideology remains a mystery," and that "At any point in her two-decade political career, she could fit the description of a number of 'types' of Democrat: centrist, moderate, progressive, liberal, establishment, or outsider." Vox also noted that Harris’s 2020 campaign fizzled out, with few slogans or policy ideas being closely associated with it.

Now that President Biden has dropped out of the race and Harris has become the presumptive Democratic nominee, it’s fair to start asking what, exactly, she plans to do for her client if she wins in November. Despite Harris’s long career and remarkable rise in politics — she has served as the San...

Democrats, in substituting a lucid 59-year-old for a fading 81-year-old, also replaced a career pragmatist with a lifelong left-wing ideologue.

Vice President Kamala Harris, now that she is the Democrats’ presumptive nominee, should be forced to answer for her decades of extremist positions on foreign policy, race, abortion, and the environment, among others. Does she still hold these views? If not, what changed her mind?

Harris, by some measures, was the leftmost member of the Senate, even more extreme than avowed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and the least bipartisan Democrat in...
