Former President Donald J. Trump won the Republican primary in Virginia on Tuesday, the first big win in a night on which he could defeat Nikki Haley in all 15 states that went to the polls for Super Tuesday.
On the Democratic side, President Biden quickly claimed victory in Virginia, North Carolina and Vermont, according to The Associated Press, on his way to his own expected sweep.
After Ms. Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, won the Republican primary in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, she was hoping the Northern Virginia suburbs would mirror the city across the Potomac River and deliver the state to her. It did not.
Polls have also closed in North Carolina and Vermont. Super Tuesday will all but determine the presidential candidates for the November election and shape Congress and statehouses for next year and beyond.
