Because celebrity draws attention, the White House invited actor and Uvalde, Tex. native Matthew McConaughey to the White House to encourage Congress to respond to the massacre of 19 children and two teachers there by passing meaningful gun reform legislation.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, McConaughey showed the artwork of one slain 10-year-old girl. He showed distinctive green sneakers another girl always wore — which he said were the only way her body could be identified. He said we must give all those children “our promise that their dreams are not going to be forgotten. We start by making the loss of these lives matter.”
