Snopes Walks Back Claim that Titanic Sub Used Elon Musk’s Starlink

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Fact-checker Snopes (Lean Left bias) suggested Elon Musk’s Starlink was partially to blame for the loss of communication with the OceanGate sub, before updating the claim.

The Details: Snopes claimed the sub was using Starlink’s satellite internet services to access the internet while on the expedition, but said it did “not know how much Starlink is responsible for the loss of contact.” As Twitter replies piled up, informing Snopes that satellites cannot effectively communicate with underwater vessels, it changed its rating from “True” to “Unproven” to “False.” Musk himself replied, “You can’t even run a good psy op.”

The Correction: In its updated article, Snopes said scientists “pointed out that the submersible… could not have relied on satellite internet to communicate with the surface,” and that OceanGate recently said it relies on Starlink internet while at sea.

How The Media Covered It: Left and right-rated news sources covered the pivot, with right-rated sources highlighting it more prominently. Right-rated sources like Fox News (Right bias), Daily Mail (Right bias), and New York Post (Lean Right bias) described Snopes as a Left outlet. (AllSides has rated the bias of 24 fact checkers, and rated Snopes as Lean Left.) Left-rated sources were very critical of Snopes, but did not mention a perceived bias of the fact-checker. Mediaite (Lean Left bias) highlighted coverage of Snopes’ original erroneous claim from Occupy Democrats (Left bias) and Pop Crave, which has since deleted its Tweet.

Fact-checking website Snopes changed a rating from “True” to “Unproven” to “False” over the course of a day, in an article about Elon Musk and the Starlink satellite system being a factor in the disappearance of a submersible with five passengers that was set to explore the wreck of the Titanic.

After communication with a submersible carrying five people was cut off (a story that continues to develop), the missing deep sea vessel was major news but quickly became a football in various ways on political Twitter. Donald Trump Jr. was in the vanguard of...

Analysis

Elon Musk is once again involved in a submarine-related, time-sensitive international news event. This time, one of the details involved in the increasingly absurd and endlessly fascinating search for OceanGate's Titan submersible that is lost on a billionaire's expedition to the Titanic is the fact that OceanGate's boat has SpaceX's Starlink internet.

The Starlink internet subplot had less frenzy around it Tuesday than the "submarine-is-controlled-by-a-Logitech-controller" subplot and the "billionaire's stepson went to the Blink-182 show" subplot. But a Snopes article Wednesday focused on the fact that OceanGate uses Starlink for internet access at...

News

Left-wing fact-checker Snopes.com altered its rating about a claim suggesting that billionaire Elon Musk’s Starlink company was partially responsible for the disappearance of the OceanGate submersible since Tuesday.

Initially, Snopes claimed the allegation of Musk’s company bearing some responsibility was "true," then updated the fact check to say it was "unproven," before finally adding necessary context and deeming the allegation "false."

The fact-checking debacle acquired the attention of Musk himself, who ripped the website on Twitter once it admitted it was wrong.
