The "misappropriated" funds were from a $67 million Medicaid settlement, $10 million of which the jury said was funneled into Casey DeSantis-aligned Hope Florida Foundation. Casey is the wife of the governor. The report was unable to find any evidence for criminal charges, saying "Despite our finding that the money was misappropriated, we find insufficient evidence to charge anyone criminally."

Political Action Committees: The money allegedly flowed from the Hope Florida Foundation into two political action committees with ties to Florida's attorney general James Uthmeier and used to fight a ballot initiative in 2024 that would have legalized marijuana for recreational use in the state.

'Baseless Smear': Outlets on the right like The New York Post (Right) tended to highlight figures like Alex Lanfranconi, the governor's communications director saying "This baseless smear has been debunked over and over again," adding that "if any confidential grand jury report was leaked to the press, that's the only crime committed." The outlet also highlighted that the report showed the jury "lament[ing]" that "there was no oversight to ensure proper usage of the taxpayer money," explaining that "the settlement didn't impose restrictions on the money."

Midterm Issue: Outlets on the left like The New York Times (Lean Left) tended to highlight that the money was diverted to support "a cause favored by the governor." Other outlets like Politico (Lean Left) framed the leak as a "midterm issue," saying that Democrats are using it "as a fresh line of attack against Sunshine State GOP incumbents." The article also called the issue a "long-running scandal" and mentioned that "the controversy" was "first uncovered by GOP state lawmakers."
