Jan. 6 Committee Holds Final Summer Hearing

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The January 6 committee investigating the Capitol riot held its final hearing of the summer Thursday, with committee leaders accusing former President Donald Trump of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Thursday's hearing focused specifically on a 187-minute period after Trump spoke before supporters in D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021, directly before the riot. Committee chairman Bennie Thompson opened the hearing by accusing Trump of doing "everything in his power to overturn the election." Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) said Trump "would not get on the phone and order the military or law enforcement agencies to help" and alleged that he "refused to defend our nation and our Constitution." Several former Trump staffers testified, including Matt Pottinger, former deputy national security adviser, and Sarah Matthews, former White House deputy press secretary. The panel said it will resume hearings in September as more information emerges.

The hearing was covered prominently across the political spectrum, especially by left- and center-rated sources. Coverage of the hearings continues to reflect partisan divides over the riot and Trump's culpability. A report from AP Politics said the panel was "diving into the 187 minutes that Trump failed to act on Jan. 6, 2021." A report from the New York Post described the panel as examining "former President Trump’s actions after his fiery speech on the Ellipse."

Chairman Bennie Thompson opened Thursday’s prime-time hearing of the Jan. 6 committee saying Donald Trump as president did “everything in his power to overturn the election” he lost to Joe Biden, including before and during the deadly Capitol attack.

“He lied, he bullied, he betrayed his oath,” charged Thompson, D-Miss.

After months of work and weeks of hearings, committee co-chair Liz Cheney of Wyoming said “the dam has begun to break” on revealing what happened that day, at the White House as well as in the violence at the Capitol.

WASHINGTON—The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol is holding the eighth and last of its summer series of hearings, focusing on an account of activities inside the White House during a 187-minute period following former President Donald Trump’s speech to his supporters that day at the Ellipse.

The panel has said it plans to portray Mr. Trump as failing to respond to the attack, a decision that committee member Rep. Elaine Luria (D., Va.), who will help lead Thursday’s 8 p.m. ET hearing, called a “dereliction of duty.”

As his supporters began to breach the grounds of the Capitol, former President Trump was on the phone with unspecified senators, his former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told Jan. 6 investigators.

It was unknown which lawmakers he called because the White House call log was empty, investigators said.

Trump also spent four minutes on the phone with his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani as he watched Fox News, according to the panel.

During his call with the former New York mayor, a Fox correspondent recounted how an Air Force veteran told...
