Trump Calls For SCOTUS To Rehear Birthright Citizenship Case Over 'Birth Package' Hospital Ads

Summary from the AllSides News Team

President Donald Trump called for the Supreme Court to rehear the birthright citizenship case following reports of a hospital advertising Spanish-language "Birth Packages" on billboards in Mexico.

Trump's Announcement: "Signs and Billboards are being put up all over our Southern Border, and Mexico, advertising BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP, with "Deliveries starting at $4000." Likewise, similar signs going up all over our Country. Billions of Dollars will be illegally made by this SCAM, with Citizenship going to anyone willing to pay. It will be, by far, the number one way of becoming a citizen, and then the entire family will be allowed to follow. Not sustainable. NOBODY SAW THIS COMING!!! AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP IS NOT FOR SALE! In fact, that is a crime, and therefore, the Supreme Court's ruling is wrong. I will be asking for a Rehearing by the United States Supreme Court, IMMEDIATELY. This miscarriage of justice will destroy America if they don't change their absolutely insane decision. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Very Rare: Fox News (Right bias) explained that when a party loses, they can file a petition for a rehearing within 25 days of the ruling being handed down. The article added, however, that "a majority of justices on the court would have to agree to rehearing in order for it to be considered again." The New York Post (Right) said that "It is very rare for the Supreme Court to rehear cases," adding that "the last time the justices opted to rehear a case they previously decided was in 1965." Fox News also highlighted that conservatives are seeking "a way to move forward against birthright citizenship," mentioning that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R) and others are "exploring" a "legislative push" to impose limits on birthright citizenship.

This One's A Doozy: In an MS Now (Left) article, opinion writer Steve Benen (Left) said "Trump wants a Supreme Court do-over on birthright citizenship, but he won't get one." Benen framed Trump's announcement as "hysterical," saying that "Even by Trump standards, this one's a doozy." Benen said that Trump took the report of Spanish-language "Birth Package" advertising and "ran with it, inventing various other details."

Spanish Advertisements: A Fox News report on Tuesday detailed an investigation by Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) into Mission Regional Medical Center over billboards along the southern border and in Mexico promoting deliveries starting at $3,950 for a natural birth and $5,525 for a C-section, directing people to a website, "havemybabyinTexas.com." The site has since been taken offline but can still be seen via web archive. The Fox report also highlighted that the telephone numbers on the billboards began with "001," which is the country code used to place calls to the US from Mexico.
