Media Split Over Framing of Crash Involving Unauthorized Immigrant Fleeing ICE

The Details: According to local officials, an unauthorized immigrant attempting to flee a targeted ICE stop last week ran a stoplight and drove onto US 130 highway where they caused a crash. The driver was unnamed in news coverage. Dr. Penelope Cohen, wife of East Brunswick mayor Brad Cohen, was injured in the crash and treated for non-life threatening injuries, The New York Times (Lean Left bias) reported. The crash closed Route 130 in both directions for more than an hour.

For Context: Gov. Sherrill signed three immigration-related bills into law in March that limited state and local police cooperation with ICE deportation efforts. Among those was legislation codifying New Jersey's 2018 Immigrant Trust Directive, which generally prevents state and local officials from assisting ICE raids or providing resources to immigration officers. It noted that ICE had detained more than 2,100 people in New Jersey in July – more than twice the roughly 850 to 950 people the agency had been arresting previously. The Times also quoted the North Brunswick mayor who said he supported efforts to apprehend serious offenders, but was concerned about the tactics being used.
