Summary from the AllSides News Team
President-elect Donald Trump announced Sunday on his Truth Social platform his decision to appoint Tom Homan, former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director under Trump’s previous administration, as "border czar."
The Details: Homan is expected to lead the effort to implement Trump’s plans to deport unauthorized migrants, while also playing a major role in securing the southern and northern borders.
For Context: Homan previously oversaw the controversial family separation policy, a part of the zero-tolerance act, and has also reportedly been a contributor to Project 2025. Last week, a federal judge blocked a Biden administration program aimed at granting amnesty to unauthorized immigrants married to U.S. citizens.
How the Media Covered It: Many sources across the political spectrum honed in on some of the commentary provided by Homan, albeit different outlets tended to concentrate on different portions of his rhetoric. Outlets on the left often highlighted Homan’s more controversial lines, such as “They ain’t seen s*** yet…Wait until 2025,” and his criticism of the purported lack of information about the financial cost of deportation efforts. Outlets on the right like Fox News (Right bias) tended to feature Homan’s comments on the "humane" aspects of these efforts, such as a targeted search for unauthorized immigrants who pose public safety or national security threats and prioritizing efforts to thwart drug cartels and sex trafficking organizations.
