Kilmar Abrego Garcia Informed He May Be Sent to Uganda After Denying Plea Deal

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Immediately following his release from a Tennessee jail, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) notified Kilmar Abrego Garcia's lawyers that he may be deported to Uganda.

The Details: The deportation notice came after Abrego Garcia's lawyers reportedly declined a plea deal. The deal would have him plead guilty to federal human smuggling charges, remain in jail, and then be deported to Costa Rica, which previously agreed to accept him. His lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the charges, arguing the government's threat of deportation to Uganda is a retaliatory act meant to coerce him into taking the plea deal.

Monday Deadline: Abrego Garcia’s lawyers said on Friday, “The government informed Mr. Abrego that he has until first thing Monday morning – precisely when he must report to ICE’s Baltimore Field Office – to accept a plea in exchange for deportation to Costa Rica, or else that offer will be off the table forever.” Associated Press (Left bias) reported that they declined to say whether he is considering the offer.

For Context: Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, was deported to El Salvador in March despite a 2019 court order protecting him from being sent there. The Trump administration later said his deportation arose from an “administrative error.” After a legal battle, he was returned to the US in June and charged with human smuggling. Earlier this week, Uganda and the US reached a deal for Uganda to receive third-country nationals not granted asylum, though Uganda said it would not accept those with criminal records.

Past Media Splits: Abrego Garcia’s story has sparked very divided coverage this year, with outlets across the spectrum framing him very differently – from a “Maryland Man” to an “illegal” immigrant.

How The Media Covered It: Associated Press highlighted the legal arguments of Abrego Garcia's attorneys, including their claims of “vindictive and selective prosecution,” but did not include comments from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Fox News (Right) referred to Abrego Garcia as an “illegal immigrant” and included comments from Noem, who called him a “monster” and vowed to “not stop fighting till this Salvadoran man faces justice and is OUT of our country.” Fox did not mention the plea deal or statements from his lawyers.
